Last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Andy Serkis appeared to promote his new film War of the Planet of the Apes, the third installment of the rebooted franchise. During his time on the late night couch, Serkis delved into his time as a perfomance capture actor, and that in truth, there’s no difference in the acting ability. He explains that everything people see in the final production is the actor, and that the digitization is there to serve the actor’s performance. He demonstrates this with a clip that begins as himself before slowly transforming into Caesar from the Apes films. It’s one thing to know that an actor is behind the character, but it’s another to actually see it progress into the final product.
While his main purpose of the visit was to promote the film, Colbert couldn’t help but ask Serkis to revisit Smeagol/Gollum and read two tweets by President Donald Trump. In true method form, Serkis immediately hops on the couch and proceeds to delight viewers with his whispy voice of the ill-fated Tolkein character.
