Andy Serkis (Gollum in LOTR, King Kong) could quite honestly be the best CGI actor of this digital era. He has been cast yet again to play an entirely digital role in the upcoming Rise of the Planet of the Apes reboot as the lead monkey Caesar. This dude is no joke when it comes to acting in a full body spandex suit with motion capture gear strapped to every part of his body. I would say he has redifened what it means to play a completely digital character. His performance as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s LOTR trilogy set a new standard for CGI characters, which he carried over to Jackson’s King Kong, and now hopefully ROTPOTA (f*ck typing that title over and over).
In the two ROTPOTA featurettes below, Serkis discusses his role as Caesar who is the lead monkey in the reboot that ultimately begins the Ape uprising against humanity. Once again you can clearly see why most directors call upon Andy to take the reigns in a film when it comes to a fully digital main character. The dude is just a straight up pro, and unlike most other digital actors his performances steal the show. That’s why I’m glad for him and his new position as Peter Jackson’s 2nd unit director on the upcoming Hobbit movies. Serkis deserves the role, and I have no doubt that he’ll knock it out of the park, as well as put on another masterful performance as Gollum.
Andy Serkis in Action
Knowing that Andy Serkis is behind the performance of one of the main apes in ROTPOTA makes me even more excited to see this film. I’ve never been a huge ape fan, but I’m a sucker for prequels so I’m totally interested in seeing how this reboot plays out. For a look into the world of Serkis and Rise of the Planet of the Apes check out the videos below. You’ve been thinking that this dude has an awesome life…
