Video games were declared the kings of entertainment by Guinness last week, and now they may be headed to glory in the sports books. Paddy Power, a British Bookie company, has opened up the world of competitive gaming to the betting public and I love it! They’ve recently announced that they will carry video game tournaments as part of their sports books. The first tournament that will take bets on gamers will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 29th.
This digital battle will be between two gamers competing in Super Street Fighter IV at Capcom’s European HQ. Paddy Power will also be streaming the event on their website for all of the betters to see. This only helps to solidify the rise of video games as a leading form of entertainment.
The Paddy Power communications manager has said, “Videogames are as much a legitimate sport as any other, We wanted to offer sports fans and games players the ultimate thrill by offering the chance to win big on the outcome of a Super Street Fighter IV competition. If it proves popular, we’ll open further books on other video game competitions.”
I hope European gamers and gamblers get on this bandwagon, so the rest of us can start betting on games. Can you imagine going to Vegas and settling in for a day of video game gambling in the sports books? That’s a utopia if I’ve ever seen one. You’ve got a new bad habit…
