A Star Wars fan on Vimeo who goes by Outside Hollywood has created a time-lapse CGI video that shows the construction of the Death Star. Apparently he used Lightwave’s Instancing tool to map out the geometry of piecing the space station together, and then the procedural generation effect did the rest.
The video is very peaceful to watch, which is ironic considering you’re seeing a death station being constructed that will eventually blow up a city and an entire planet. No detail is missed either, because you can see little tugboat style ships dropping off parts, as well as Star Destroyers ferrying in supplies. I wonder what type of math went into this project, because the creator had to have plugged in some complex geometric coordinates to get this project to work. Either way the end result is nothing short of spectacular, and well worth a few minutes of your time to watch it in full. Head on up above to check out the time-lapse Death Star build.
