I first came to appreciate Weta as a VFX shop back when they worked with Peter Jackson on the LOTR trilogy. From there they’ve gone on to make some of the best looking special effects shots ever seen (King Kong, Avatar). They are also the studio that was charged with bringing our ape friends to life in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which opened last night. I have yet to see the film, but from the trailers I’ve seen I think that Weta has done an overall bang-up job on bringing hundreds of animals to life as they take claim to our planet. Once again, with their technology and Andy Serkis’s motion capture performance, Weta looks to have nailed another fully CG lead movie character. If you’ve seen the film please let us know what you thought of it, as well as how you think Weta did with the VFX. I’ll be going to see this as soon as I’m done wasting away at the beach. You’ve been thinking that a bunch of smart a*s monkeys would really make for a bad week…
