What Movie Buffs Want For The Week of 6-8-14

Stick With TV and Theater Releases This Week

This is a slow week for Blu-Ray/DVD new releases. Non-Stop and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit are the two mentionable titles coming to the small screen. Non-Stop is a thriller that is set on a plane. It is up to the air marshal to find out who is putting the passengers at risk for ransom. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is about a CIA agent that uncovers a plot for a terrorist attack against the United States.

Showtime will try and steal some of HBO’s thunder by releasing the first season of Ray Donovan the same week as True Detective is released. True Detective follows two detectives trying to find a serial killer. While trying solve the crime, their lives will intersect over the course of 17 years. Ray Donovan is what you would call a problem solver. He makes the big bucks to make sure that secrets stay buried and never come to light.

This weekends theater releases offers something different for families and adults. Hiccup and Toothless are back at it again in How to Train Your Dragon 2. Follow them as they set out on a new adventure that has them pinned up a new baddie. Hiccup will also learn why he has been able to train dragons after he is reunited with his mother. 22 Jump Street follows your favorite undercover cops in college. What unintentional havoc will Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill cause in the highly anticipated sequel to 21 Jump Street?

Our Recommendation:

There’s not much going on the small screen for movies. You’re probably better off saving your money this week. If you’re looking to catch up on any TV shows, then pick up HBO’s True Detective. Matthew McConaughey gives a stand out performance as detective Rustin Chole. He is exceptional at what he does, but has a troubled and hidden past. Woody Harrelson also shines in the HBO drama. Martin Hart seems like that most put together guy around. He has a loving family, yet he can’t seem to get it together. The pairing of these two men is strange, but that’s what makes the show. Sure there’s s serial killer to be found, but it’s the relationship of these two characters that really make the show.

This Friday you’ll have two movies to choose from How To Train Your Dragon 2 and 22 Jump Street. There’s no wrong choice here at all. Parents will want to take their kiddos to see How To Train Your Dragon 2. Even if you don’t have kids, you’ll still want to check this movie. If animated movies aren your thing, go see 22 Jump Street. I’ll be honest, 21 Jump Street surprised the hell out of me when it came out in 2012. Who knew that Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill could be that funny together. 22 Jump Street is taking thing to next level and the boys are heading to college. Most people are familiar with the stigma that surrounds sequels, but this doesn’t seem to be the case here. Down below, you’ll find the trailers for both movies if you still need a little convincing.
