Another announcement from Nintendo Direct is that select Wii games will be available on the Wii U eShop. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is available today, Punch-Out!! will be available January 22 in North America and Donkey Kong Country Returns will be available in Europe on the same date, and Metroid Prime: Trilogy will be released January 29. The games will be $20 on eShop but are available at half price for the first week after their release.

The Wii U is backwards compatible so it already had the capability to play Wii games. The caveat with these downloads is they launch right from the Wii U menu like any other downloaded software. Games that utilized the Wii Classic Controller can use the Wii U GamePad as well. Nintendo has plans to release more Wii games onto the eShop sometime this year.

This may not seem like a giant leap forward, but considering that Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Prime: Trilogy are tough to find and somewhat pricey on the secondhand market, they can now be had for a reasonable price.
